A hat that fits well sits level, feels secure without pressing, and leaves a light mark, not a deep one, when you take it off. Finding that fit starts with a single measurement.
What you need A soft tape measure works best. If you only have a rigid one, use a length of string and hold it against a ruler afterwards.
How to measure Pass the tape around your head where the hat will sit: roughly a centimetre above your ears and across the middle of your forehead. Keep it level all the way round, and snug rather than tight. Take the reading in both centimetres and inches, and measure twice to be sure.
Reading your size That measurement is your starting point. Check it against our size guide, where head measurements are matched to sizes for each style. Sizing can vary a little between shapes. A structured felt and a soft knit do not behave the same way, so the guide is the place to confirm.
If you fall between sizes It happens often. As a rule, size up rather than down: a hat that is a touch generous can be brought in with a hat liner, while one that is too small has nowhere to go. A thicker head of hair also takes up room, so bear that in mind if you are close to the line.
A few things worth knowing Heads are rarely perfectly round, so a hat may feel firmer at the front and back than at the sides, and that is normal. A new hat also eases slightly with wear, so aim for secure rather than loose on the first try.
When you have your measurement, our size guide will point you to the right fit across the edit.
